Artist’s Statement

I wish to advise that I have had a legal name change and I am now known as Liadaan Fahbien, signing my work as Liadaan or with the initials LTF.   I used to work under the name of Lyndel Thomas.

Dividing my work between the disciplines of painting, drawing, sculpture and poetry, I am a contemplative artist. I look for the light, mood and atmosphere of the subject favoring late afternoon and crepuscular subjects. Figures are usually painted in contemplative poses.  I work plein air and in the studio and attend a weekly life drawing group.  Still life is also a well loved subject.

My fusion and ceramic sculptures are intuitive and usually personifications of nature and animal dreamings with an emphasis on the feminine.  Perhaps due to their symbolic nature and appearance they may not appear to relate to my nature paintings, however they tie in perfectly.  To create nature sculptures it is necessary to use dream language and a form of  sculptural shorthand.

I also write haiku which is often accompanied by small tonal paintings. The verses follow the tradition in that they are nature poems and use the syllable formula of 5-7-5.  The paintings break with tradition and have a distinctly western feel.

I don’t follow art trends keeping true to my own vision and working from the heart. I consider all of my work to be a meditation.
